Christmas decorations are going up in the shops and we’re all wondering where 2009 went already.  We do still have two months to go and in the rural sector it is an incredibly busy two months as we make the most of spring.

In this Issue

All the best for you and your team in the lead up to Christmas.

From the team at No.8 HR

Dealing with change - what others are doing

There is no doubt that although the dairy payout has shown a resurgence recently these are still incredibly tough times in most of the agribusiness sector.  No.8 HR clients are using a number of strategies to get them through and we anticipate that clients and their staff will need to continue to work together to find solutions.

A recent article in the Harvard Business review again highlighted that basic human needs such as the need to belong, feel part of decision making, achieve, acquire and defend are almost hard-wired into our psyche.  The smart employers are therefore the ones who, wherever possible, engage their staff in any change process rather than enforce it.

Rewarding staff in tough times

People who feel good about themselves are more engaged in their work.

Research tells us that the keys to motivating people and keeping them engaged require you to do the following:

  1. Make an effort to get to know your people
  2. Show them how the skills and activities they undertake fit into the larger picture
  3. Acknowledge and praise the work they have done well
  4. Give regular feedback on their performance
  5. Provide stretching goals with the support to achieve them
  6. Make the workplace fun
  7. Foster a sense of belonging and community

Highlight the things from the list that you know you do well.

Take a look at the things you haven’t highlighted and think about some simple things that you can do to implement at least two of these things into your workplace this month.  Next month, look at another two (and so on)....  It takes 27 days to embed a behaviour so only move to the next set of activities once you have stuck to your strategy for at least this period of time and it has become ‘part of what normally happens around here.’
