Winter on a dairy farm means one thing: calving is here. And while it brings the buzz of new life and the hope of a good season ahead, it’s also one of the toughest times of the year – physically, mentally, and emotionally.
With early mornings, long days, chilly weather, and very little rest, it’s easy to forget that people – not just cows – need care and attention too.
Fatigue is no joke. It affects productivity, increases the risk of accidents, and can create unnecessary tension in teams. And it creeps up on you – one missed break, one skipped meal, one too many late nights, and before you know it, you’re running on empty.
That’s why now is the time to check in – with yourself and with your team.
Are people taking proper breaks, eating well, and drinking enough water?
Are rosters realistic, and is there a plan for those inevitable middle-of-the-night callouts?
Are managers leading by example and encouraging downtime when it’s needed?
The winter blues are real. The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand reminds us that cold, grey days and long nights can affect mood – especially when combined with stress and fatigue. Feelings of irritability, low energy, and a drop in motivation are common and can easily snowball into something more serious. Their winter wellbeing guide includes practical tips that still matter, even when you’re already on your feet all day:
Be deliberate about connection. Working alongside each other isn’t the same as checking in. Take time for a proper conversation, especially with someone who might be struggling.
Fuel your body. Eating well can fall down the list when you’re busy, but good food (and enough of it) helps keep your energy and mood steady.
Watch your stress signals. Low mood often shows up as frustration, sleep issues, or just feeling “off.” Don’t ignore those signs — talk to someone, take a break, or ask for help.
Prioritise sleep where you can. You might not get full nights right now, but quality rest still matters. Even short naps or small changes to your evening routine can make a difference.
Calving isn’t a solo mission – and the best teams are the ones that lift each other up. At your next team meeting, make time to talk about how you’re going to support each other over the next couple of months. A few minutes spent now can save hours of stress later.
So yes, it’s a busy season. But let’s not forget the basics. Hydrate. Eat. Rest. Talk. Check in. Be kind – to yourself and to each other. Because when the people are thriving, the farm does too.
